Lana was raised in Miami Beach, Florida and attended North Miami Beach Senior High School. When Lana was 13, she discovered Tony Buzan's famous book Use your Head. Since then she has published her own book Brain Power for Kids and has lectured extensively in many countries around the world.

When she went on to Harvard University, Lana's activities included participation in the Harvard-Radcliffe Speech and Parliamentary Debate Society. There she received first place in the 1996 Yale University Debate and Boston University Debate competitions. She was also a Harvard Crimson science editor, and participated in Junior Varsity Soccer and the Harvard Boxing Club. Her academic achievements include Junior Phi Beta Kappa, a John Harvard Scholarship, and the Elizabeth Cary Agassiz Merit Award.

Lana gained a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford.
